  • Halifax County Animal Control (HCAC) only accepts checks or money orders. No cards or cash are accepted.

  • A dog tag is required for all individual dogs within the County. Dog tags can be purchased at the Treasurer's Office for $10. Dog tags must be renewed each year. Cats are not required to have a tag.

  • If you are missing a pet/animal, please notify Halifax County Animal Control at 434-572-4292. If Halifax County Animal Control is in possession of your pet/animal, you will be asked to come to the facility during business hours to reclaim it. You will need to show proof of ownership (unless the animal is chipped) and proof of rabies vaccine. The fee to reclaim a pet is $20, plus $10 per day for boarding.

  • If you wish to adopt an animal from Halifax County Animal Control, you can visit the shelter during normal operating hours. Adopters must sign an adoption contract. The adoption fee is $40 for dogs and $20 for cats. Adopted animals are required to be spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption.

  • Non-monetary donations are accepted and appreciated. The shelter accepts newspapers, towels, washcloths, animal food of any sort, and hard toys. No stuffed toys, please.

  • Halifax County Animal Control has a volunteer program for individuals 18 years of age and older. If you wish to participate, please call the shelter for more information. HCAC will accept Community Service workers from the state and county probation offices.

  • The LATR is the Large Animal Technical Rescue Team. This is a specialized team of certified individuals who respond when a farm animal becomes trapped in a physical situation from which they cannot walk or climb out of on their own.
