The Tax Assessor is responsible for the biennial reassessment of all real estate in the County. As required by Virginia law, Halifax County assesses at 100% of fair market value in a uniform and equitable manner. Other functions of the Real Estate Assessment Office include:

  • Interpret and administer all laws pertaining to real estate assessments
  • Create and update the Land Book (Tax Roll), and publish the current information by September 1 of each year
  • Maintain accurate, current property information
  • Reply to inquiries concerning assessment procedures
  • Defend assessed values before the Board of Equalization
